I've been chatting with another hunter on a Georgia hunting forum and he is adamately opposed to using Triple 7 in any form because he says it leaves a crud ring at the forward end of the breech plug which prevents proper seating of the projectile. He says use Pyrodex only. Anyone disagree with this opinion??

Winchester developed a 209 (called 777) primer especially designed to eliminate the ring you described. I have tried them and they work.

That's what I thought, but the guy in Georgia says that doesn't help. Would you recommend the powder (FFG or FFFG) or the pellets?

I shot the 777 loose powder a week or so ago at the range and used the new 777 primers.

No crud ring.

What load and grain (FFG or FFFG) and bullet do you shoot and do you like the powder over the pellet??

Pellets suck, in my opinion. Too much chance for a messed up ignition or cracked pellets. The crud ring is also more likely to occur with the use of pellets. I only shoot loose.

I shoot 80 grains of loose FFG Triple Seven and a 300 grain Hornady XTP.

Out of three different mz's I've owned, only one had a problem with the "crud ring". The other two have never showed any signs of it. Currently shooting 110 gr. of FFF triple seven with a 250 gr. barnes expender.

The most I have ever shot my muzzleloader on one hunt was 7 times.
(Never use 777 pellets with number 11 caps)
I always clean my muzzleloader after shooting it on a hunt and I have never really noticed any kind of "crud ring" but that don't mean it isn't there.
I personally prefer 777 pellets. Just alot easier than powder, cleaner than pyrodex and my gun seems to like them.

I use 3 777 pellets and the only differance I see between 777 and pyrodex is the gun is a lot easier to clean. I've tried the powder and pellets, but also like the pellets better.

By in large I would say between loose and pellets is a personal preference. That being said,, 100 gr loose pyrodex is not equivalant to 100 gr loose 777. The 777 produces higher velocities for the same measured powder charge than pyrodex.

The 777 pellets (50gr pyrodex eqiuiv) and pyrodex pellets (50 gr) will yield roughly the same velocity give a few FPS to the 777 pellets.

Loose is another matter as 100 gr 777 loose can near 2000 fps with a 250 gr projectile. That charge of Pyrodex loose just can't do that.

Even if 777 created a crud ring, why would it matter? After one shot the deer doesn't care whether there was fouling left in your barrel...after all he's dead!.

777 FFFG burns cleaner and is a tad hotter than the 777 FFG Powder.

I've used the No 11, muzzleloader primer, 209 and now the 25 acp cartridge w/ cci brench rest primer and all produce ring.

As far as hunting your only going to get one shot so again (who ever stated) why does it matter. But if you shoot at the range for fun, it just cause a little extra work between shots or every two or three shots. Most clean between shots "so why does it matter" 777 loose is a great product as well as other porducts, I just have fun doing it, that is shooting muzzleloaders.

I tried 3 50 gr. 777 pellets this weekend in my Encore with 250 gr shockwaves. The primers were flattened and I had to pry the primers out. Backed off to 2 pellets, primers cam out easily and the groups were better, less than 1 inch @ 50 yards. I've been shooting the 777 pellets for 3 years and have never had the crud ring.
Anyone else having the pressure signs with 3 pelltes I had?

777 FFFG burns cleaner and is a tad hotter than the 777 FFG Powder.
Coming thru Springfield the other day, and stopped by Bass Pro and bought my first canister of triple 7. When I get home, I notice that it is fffg(I was not aware that triple 7 came in both sizes). So, in subsequently reading on the subject, the statement was made that generally fffg performs better in smaller than .50caliber and ffg from .50 up. Is your rifle .50 or whichever, or does anyone shoot fffg in .50, and if so, do you notice any practical difference?

I shoot 110 gr. of FFF triple seven and a 250 gr. Barnes expander out of my .50 Knight with great results. The smallests groups I've shot were 1 1/8" with none of the groups running over 1 1/2". It seems to perform pretty well to me.

I shoot a 209 primer in front of 100gr fff7 behind a sabboted 240gr .44 out of my knight with no crud ring and group 3 shots at 100yds within 1 inch. I am no crack shoot but feel this is pretty good with a old ML with a 209 conversion kit. I could not get the same results from pyrodex. My buddy has the same set up and can get only a 3 inch group. He gets worse with pyrodex. I believe you have to experiment to find what works.

I am going to use 777 FFFG powder instead of pellets this year. I did not get the results I was expecting from the pellets last year, nor did the Powerbelt bullets impress me. I am going back to Barnes expanders. I know what they can do. As for the cleanup, it is not that bad. I don't remember who posted it, but I also don't mind the extra cleaning. That IS muzzleloading and that is why I enjoy it. As a side note, each gun will react a little different than another with certain loads. Find what suits you and drop the hammer on a biggun'. Good luck.
