I had an Encore, sold it for different reasons and now I am going to buy another one. First reason I want one is the light weight to tote around sometimes when I am lazy. Second reason is because they can be VERY accurate. Third reason is because man told me he misses it and wishes I hadn't sold it.
He will be using it as much, if not more than I will be. The last one I had our favorite barrel was the .308 and it kicked less than his Remington Model 7 youth chambered in the .260 so he REALLY liked it. Here is my question.
I can get an Encore in blued with wood chambered in the .243 for right at $500 tax and all. I can get an Encore in blued with wood chambered in the .308 for almost $100 more. The .243 is at one store and in stock. The .308 has to be ordered from another store. They can get it in two days.
I am going to call the store that has the .243 and see what they can order me a .308 for. If it is the same price it is a no brainer, if it is higher then I have to choose. I do know I will eventually own another .308 barrel. Do I go ahead and bite the bullet and buy it now by spending more, or just have the .243 and wait till later for the .308?

I'd get the 308 so you can have 2 days to figure out what type of glass and hardware you are going to put on it.

.308 for sure. Man will be able to hang with it the rest of his life and you won't have a .243 barrel hanging around collecting dust.

If I had more of my guns up here, I have a mod 70 in 308 that he could use, and use it as long as he wanted. It has been a good one for me.
Most of mine are in safes in South Carolina. I did buy another 7MM mag Mark 11 stainless the other day.

.243 in my opinion bought one for my graduation present to myself. The main reason i got it was if i had kids and they wanted to hunt they could start off with it but the more i shoot it i love it.
You should have kept the other encore lol
DId you check beside cheers in martin they had a wood stock encore for sale.

No I didn't big8's but I will tomorrow. I actually know a guy that works for a man that owns like 20 pawn shops in Mississippi and he said since the encore has come out he has NEVER seen an encore in a pawn shop. He thinks people that can buy them have enough money to keep them. I dunno but I am gonna check on it for sure.

Ditto unless Ruger has an itch for a 243.

I like both those calibers alot. 308 has alot more bullet selection though.

Second reason is because they can be VERY accurate.
Best of luck to you.
I've had one with a .50 cal and a 7mm-08 barrel for several years and have just now found what I think is the secret - for me - to getting decent accuracy. I sent the gun off to get the headspace checked/adjusted and get the forend bedded. Between that and handloads with the right ammo, I think I'm on the right track.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Encore is one of the coolest, if not the coolest, guns going. I've just been really frustrated with mine many times - almost to the point of making a boat anchor - and would encourage you to keep at it until you're satisfied.
Again, good luck! Elvis
