Depends on who you ask. LOL,me I really like Ruger 10/22's and and my old Remington single shot.

I wish I could have my old springfield 340B .22LR single shot. For a open sight gun, it was a death wish for squirrels.

build you a cusom 10/22 can do it pretty cheap and they are very good shooters wish i never got rid of the one i built

For me it's my old Marlin 39a. I shot one that belonged to one of my dad's friends when I was young which had the octagonal barrel and liked it. As soon as I was old enough to buy my own I bought mine and have had it since back before a lot of you were born. I like others but it's always been my favorite.

I agree with Whelen Man,Marlin 39s are hard to beat. If you want to go lower end, Marlin Model 60. For the money u can't beat the accuracy of these little rifles out of the box. Triggers are a little heavy ,but will lighten up with use. Get the stainless model with the Black and Grey Laminated stock. They are sharp.

Rifle or pistol. For a rifle the best has to be an Anschutz. I picked up a Rem 40x that is pretty nice.
