I would really appreciate some opinions on muzzleloading projectiles. I've got a replica .45 cal. plains rifle (Traditions) with a 1:48" twist. I've always shot patched round balls at the range and have not hunted much with this rifle. I want to use it during the upcomming muzzleloading season and would like to try some of the newer projectiles. Would anyone have some adive on a good choice?

Welcome to tndeer. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your question. If you copy and paste this post in the Muzzleloader Forum, you are more likely to get some replies from folks in the know. Good luck.

Yeah, I wouldn't use round balls for hunting. .45 cal, that's just not enough Pb. I used to have 1:48 gun (.50 cal) and it handled sabots decently (3"@50yrd) I was shooting a .429dia Hornady 180 JHP XTP. I think I'm the only nerd I know of that hunted with a 180grn bullet. Most hunters prefer the larger 250-300+ grain bullets. You'll obviously have to coordinate an appropriate sabot/bullet combo for that .45 and you may have to do some hard lookin online. Maybe try Midway.com or Midsouth Shooters Supply
for some different options. I personally didn't like those lube conicals that you just sort of 'jammed' down the barrel. The sabots seal gases very effectively. Hopefully, there's a start for you. Welcome to TnDeer.Com. Anybody else want chime in or beat me over the head,,,,help us out here! stovepipe

Just be sure you sight in with whatever you use and see what you gun handles best. I had a Thompson center New Englander and it shot best with round ball....my Remington 700 shoots best with buffalo bullets...with either one at 100 yards the change of bullets changed the hit point by about 18 to 20 inches.
