Typically while I'm ripping open bags of seed to plant our plots I drop a little in the bed of the truck. These seeds typically sprout after a rain and the bed of my truck is green until they dry out.

I noticed today none of the seeds in my truck bed sprouted.

Hmm...

I had two bags of seed left. I ripped them open, took out 100 seeds from each (yes, I counted) and put them in moist paper towels to see if they'd germinate. Five days...nothing. Usually with this test they sprout within a day.

I do believe I'll be driving to the farm Wednesday to check on things.

If something was wrong with all that seed I'm gonna want about 18 hours of my life back.

Man, that sux, although I like the truck flowerbed visual. I get some nice new growth every year in my jon boat. I don't even have to plant for it to flourish.

No brand. Just seed wheat and forage oats. Bought it about 3 weeks ago from a local place in Murfreesboro.

There's still a chance what was broadcast at the farm came up. I'll check Wednesday to see for sure. If not I'll have to buy more and plant again. I can't believe the whole 750 pounds was bad, but we'll see.

If by some chance most or all of the seed did fail the "someone" in the thread title is probably myself. I normally do the paper towel test to check germination rates before planting. I skipped it this year due to time constraints.

If you don't get germination in the "paper-towel test" you probably have bad seed.

Unfortunately, due to limited high-quality cereal grain seed availability this year, I've seen "feed" wheat being sold as "seed" wheat. Even on the bags of wheat I buoght this year I noticed the germination rates on the tag were only 80% instead of the usual 95%. I also noticed I had a lot of wheat seed on top the ground that had not germinated 3-4 days after the last rain.

I'm heading down tomorrow to look. If I see less than 50% germination I'm buying another 500 pounds of seed from a different source and planting again.

After taking a close look at the seed I'm seeing little "burr holes" in some of them. Looks like some kind of worm or other pest drilled in to some of the seed and had dinner.

I bought 50 lbs of winter wheat at the COOP. Got to asking after seeing the germ rate on the tag at 85%. Man told me it was not certified as seed wheat due to the low rate. Some will come up, but not like certified seed.

Of course - being that I planted and no rain came, none will probably come up!

We had this problem earlier this Spring with some Milo. We planted it for dove hunting and very VERY few came up. It turns out that the bag was busted and we think the seed was old and may have freezed at some point causing lack of germination. It definitely sucks to lose all that time and money on seed and diesel.

Trapper, I feel your pain. I bought a bag of $10 seed at Walmart. It had 3 different types of rape in it, and it was supposed to grow 24" tall in 45 days. Well I planted it in a 1/4 acre plot and then planted some rape that I bought at the local seed store for 75 cents a pound. Guess which one came up. The 75 cents a pound rape has leaves as big as my hand, the $10 a bag stuff has small leaves and there is only about 25% germination. I learned by lesson. Buy the cheap seed and forget the high dollar stuff.
