I hear people use the term mast crop what is it?

"Hard" mast is generally acorns. "Soft" mast, wild fruits, berries, etc. i.e. Persimmons.

Fruits, berries and nuts. Fruits and berries are "soft" mast, while nuts are "hard" mast.
