It all Depends for me. For ex) This year got a small group of does (3) coming into 1 of my stand locations. 2 good size does and a fawn. In this case I would take 1 of the does. If it was just momma and her fawn...She gets a pass.

When I was younger and didn't have very many deer under my belt I would shoot anything that walked under my stand. Now I know that I can pass on a doe with young and be able to kill one that doesn't.

Some studies have shown that orphaned male fawns are more likely to survive to the age of 2 1/2 or older, than non-orphaned male fawns, which is part of the reason some will say, "if you want more bucks, shoot more does." Another reason you might have more bucks is because these same studies have shown that orphaned male fawns are less likely to disperse from their birth areas. So with normal dispersal distances exceeding a mile (sometimes many miles), targeting does with male fawns (aka button bucks) can be a management plan for increasing your resident buck population.

good info wes

MY rule of thumb is if they have spots mama gets a pass but if they don't well they don't! ;\)

I killed one hopping in on 3 legs one year..field dressed 34lbs.
It may have made it just fine, but it sure made it easy to drag that mile to the truck...Guys at work said I had to put the spare tire on it to keep from blowing out.Good eating.

Killed a big momma this morning with twins. If I passed on does with fawns, I wouldn't have many does to shoot at. Seems like every one I have on camera this year has fawns.

Like BSK and a few others have correctly stated, I purposely try to take out the does with fawns, especially the big mature ones. It will improve the general population, especially the buck fawns, over time by doing so.
