Due to lack of rain dad is hurting for pasture but he is letting me plant 3 acres (80 acre farm 95% Pasture joined by woods on 2.5 sides). He is firm on me not tilling my food plot. my question is will NO TILL planting work as well as if I tilled it? I'm a new member to TnDeer.com just wanted to say it is good to talk to people that have the same intrest as myself.

NO,. it will not work as well ,.. but it will work somewhat. Especially if that pasture has not been cut and its real thick. Seed needs to touch dirt to germinate. If you can get that,. winter wheat and rape will work some.

What if you were to drill the seeds?

Mow it, wait a week then spray it with Roundup/Glyphosate. You can sow it anytime after you spray it. I've had good luck with the wheat, crimson, and DER mix that is recommended on here by BSK and DC007. I've planted that mix on rocky ridge top ground with no groundbreaking at all and had a pretty good stand after a couple of rains. Got to watch the turkeys or they will eat up the wheat if you go a few weeks with no rain after planting.

Guys, the soil was so charged and the timing so good that i planted wheat this past mon morn and by wed every piece of wheat i picked up had a white fuzzy tail on it.....fantastic 2 day germination results. should have green in a few more days especially with more rain from the gulf coming tonight/tomorrow!!
We planted close to 30 fields in the past 4 days....
I am so excited!!!

What CoachB said.

The wheat seed I broadcast (without ground-turning) and only received rain for the first time last weekend already germinated and the wheat is 4 inches high.

It will work will if you drill it as long as you do not get it to dip it. And it depends on what you are planting make sure you read about how deep it needs to be If you got a tractor, Bushhog and a hare bushhog it as low as you can get it then run the hare on the ground to scratch it to get some loose dirt and then broadcast the seed

if you use a no till drill it will work fine. it can actualy be better than conventional till because you can better control the depth of your seed. make sure you get you get a good kill on whatever is there now, and make sure the ground is clean(debris)

A no-till drill is the best way to plant no-ground-prep plots, but you can do it with just broadcast techniques. They won't be as productive as with a drill, but something is better than nothing.
