Scope or Red Dot?

I've been using a Red Dot on my Horton. It's been suggested I switch to a scope. I'd like to hear opinions on pros & cons of each, preferably from those who have used both.

I like a scope a lot better.... I had a red dot on a horton i traded for and did not like it... I could not be as precise with it as I could with the scope on my Xcal.... I purchased another scope and to me that made all the differnce in teh world in the accuracy of the Horton. I put a Excalibur varizone on it... it has hash marks for 20 30 40 50... granted I would not shoot at one at 50 yards but I like the marks for 20 & 30 .....
IMO if you want the best scope for a crossbow the new Excalibur Lumizone is awesome....

I have a Millet red dot on my xbow. The cap has set up and I can't get it off - as long as the battery holds up I guess I don't have to but it is going on 8 years old.
I like a scope better myself mainly because I always worried I'd turn it on (red dot) just prior to something coming in range and then forget to turn it back off. Then next hunt figure it out too late.

Well, I took the red dot off and put the scope on (Horton Mult-A-Range 4x32). I LIKE it! As noted, it seems to shoot more precisely than the red dot did. I sighted in (on a bench rest) at 20... then just scooted back to 30 and 40 respectively. The Mult-A-Range lines seemed to be dead on. Actually the 40-yard shot a inch or so high... however I didn't actually "measure" 40 yards... I was just "pacing" 40 yards so my distance could have easily been off some. But regardless, at all three distances I was dropping arrows consistently in a 3-inch black bullseye. I'll definitely be sticking with the scope.

That sounds great. Looks like your ready to go.
I tried the red dot (both cheap and expensive) and a few (low to mid-dollar) scopes and nothing compares to a scope for me. I purchased the new LumiZone scope a few months back and I dont believe I will be buying another scope for a very long time.
Check them out if you get time just because of the adjustable speed dial but also because of the illuminated reticles.

I don't know if your crossbow is like mine, but if it is, make sure
that dials on the Dial-A-Range are set to the same thing each time.
I keep mine set on zero all the time. (I check it frequently)
They will bump on things and get dialed up or down a click or two and throw you scope off.

Get yerself one of them Excal Lumizone scopes & sight it in and yer good to go. They be the cats Meow!

Any time you can cut out the chance of a dead battery or electronic malfunction ruinin a hunt , you should ! The biggest advantage of a reg.optical scope vs a dot is brightness in marginal light and magnification to see objects that might be tween you and your target . BW ,writers is so dumb !!

The TenPoint Pro View is a scope that has red or green dots (adjustable for brilliancy) on the crosshairs or just plain old crosshairs - your choice. I prefer green.,.
If the battery is dead then it is just a regular scope.
Works for me..

I've noticed that it seems like I lose about twenty mins of hunting light due to red dots and those twenty minutes are the prime duck and dawn time. The only thing of mine that wear red dots any more are shotguns.

That is what I like about the TenPoint 3X Pro View in that I can turn down the intensity of teh dots as it gets darker. It is also 3 power magnification and that gathers light.

There is a reason the LE & Military community (SPEC OPS) included use a red dot for CQB even in very low light (almost dark) it is faster and far more accurate that a cross hair,learn to use the brightness adjustment (rheostat) well and I doubt you'll have any problems anytime that is legal with a good quality RD

I like the factory range finding scope on my Exocet, less to worry about.

I think the red dot has it advantages at times.
One of my hunting buds had a monster 11 in sight last year just as he got the shot he wanted to take, wouldn't ya know it the darn batteries dead, no dot. Thats right not dot no buck.
This is the reason I 've decided not to use them.
He was big time ticked off.

Scope and then you have 0 issues for dead batteries. If you do go red-dot make 100% certain you carry backup batteries. Sucks to end a hunt early due to not having sights.
