My friend's husband lost part of his thumb last weekend sighting in his crossbow... apparantely had his thumb up on the raceway when he fired a bolt and felt a 'ping' on his left hand. He looked down to find about 3/4" of his thumb missing. The cable amputated it, and they found the thumb about 30 yards away downrange. Unfortunately, it was not a clean sever and the hand surgeon was unable to reattach the thumb.

He had been shooting crossbows for many years, this was not an inexperienced shooter/hunter.

Food for thought.

My biggest fear with a crossbow. I warn my daughter continually (but am also thankful for the hand guard).

I did that one time but it was just a glancing blow. You talk about hurting. I learned my lesson. Sorry about your friend.

Yep. Pays to pay attention to what you are doing. Most of the ones they now make, have various designs to prevent that.

That happened to my sister several years ago. Luckily it only cracked her thumbnail and bruised her real bad. A guy a used to work with tho had the same thing happen. He lost the tip of his thumb and ended up having surgery. I think it cracked a bone. That would make a fellow pass out from the pain I bet!
