This year, for the first time, I've gotten several pictures series that shows a behavior I've never witnessed on cam before. On a couple of different properties, I've gotten picture sequences over the last couple of weeks showing a fawn sneaking up behind an older buck--or even a group of older bucks--and sniffing one of the buck's tarsals. And I mean the fawns are truly sneaking up on the bucks, very low to the ground, coming in from behind, and looking ready to bolt away.

Anyone else seen this before?

That is interesting. Can you tell if they are buck or doe fawns?

I can't remember ever seeing that before. In fact, I can't recall ever getting a picture of a 3.5+ buck with a fawn.

No. And that is weird. Have you seen this on different properties?

Yup, several properties, but only in the last two weeks.

Both male and female fawns. Now I've always noticed that button bucks become absolutely fascinated with scrapes, especially late in the rut. But I've never seen fawns actually sneak up behind bucks and sniff their hocks.

That is definitely a first for me, never heard or seen of such. I am aware of your "confidentiality agreement" with clients, but if you get some pics on your property, I think they would be worthy of posting for the group to see.

I may have to ask clients if it is OK to share those pictures. Very cool sequences.
