Just got through placing my order with the state for 1,600 shrubs that will be planted in Jan, Feb, and Mar. I also went ahead and scheduled a chiropactor appointment - not really but I'll probably need one. I hope my young sons come to appreciate their deer hunting Mecca someday and take care of ol' dad and his broke down back and locked up knees.

Habitat improvement is so addictive.

Wow, that's a lot. What did you order? If you don't own one, buy a planting bar or two, they are much easier to use than a shovel. The best advice I have is to have the roots pointed down (not J) and keep the roots moist. The Persimmons I planted 20 years ago from the state are loaded with fruit this year. Too soon you will be looking back 20 years at the work you did and realize it was worth it. You may want to flag the seedlings if you need to cut down the weeds or brush competition in future years.

I don't know which shrubs he bought but his source is: https://www.tn.gov/agriculture/publications/forestry/seedlingcatalog.pdf Order soon because at some point they sell out of everything.

I ordered (300) Beautyberry, (200) Indigobush, (300) Elderberry, (200) American Plum, (300) Hazlenut, (100) Chickasaw Plum, (100) Persimmon, and (100) Red Mulberry. Keep in mind my goal is expanding hedgerow with good cover shrubs and mixing in nutritional value as well.

My brother and I planted 500 trees this past March over the course of (2) weekends and it liked to kill us so I figured 1,600 should be a breeze . However, I'm trying to get some additional help. We did use a dibble to plant what trees and shrubs we could but most of them we planted back in March had such a robust root system a dibble was useless unfortunately. Almost everything took (2) good shovel scoops to plant and a lot of time spent on the ground. If this doesn't kill us, I hope to transition to more hardwoods plantings next year. It's been quite the journey, but it is rewarding to see the fruits of our labor too.

I sure hope you do get some help for 1,600. \:\) I did either 400 or 500 at one time and that's all I want to ever do at once. Sounds like you are going to have a great variety of plant species and quite a wildlife spot in years to come!

Well, the good news is the shipments are staggered. I'll get 500 in January, 500 in February, and 600 in March so I won't necessarily have to do them all at once per se'.
