Just how long on average (with adequate rainfall of course) does it take pellet lime to begin working with the soil?
Reason I ask, I have a new road to plant that we just broke. It isn't much I don't guess but probably 1/4 acre total if that.
Gonna plant wheat/rape on this road.

It will take 6 months or more to get the full effect. If you did not do a soil sample I would start with a least 2 tons per arce.

I haven't used any in a few years and haven't thought about it. Seems by reading studies done that pellets may react even slower than bulk lime does.

pellets take longer, but with any lime, its best to put out several months before any type of planting and such takes place..
I would put out right after deer season ends, that way it has adequate time to break down into the soil and be ready for spring and summer plots. JMHO

I'll probably just throw the wheat and rape and fertilize. I do have a soil sample for this road. In all, that ridge will have about 400-500 yards of grass sowed on it on the road.
I hope the 22 other plots do their thing. LOL

I always thought pelletized lime was 'faster' than regular ag lime. Would depend exactly what it was compared to. the pelletized stuff is ground extremely fine before pelleting.

I always thought the same. However, after reading on the net about some studies done with it, it seems it isn't as fast and may be slower in some instances.
If I read that wrong, someone correct me.

Nope, you're not reading them wrong. The latest research indicates pelletized lime does NOT react faster than standard ag lime, and may take longer due to pellet break-down requirements.
A standard rule of thumb is to apply lime one "season" before it is needed. In essence, to get the most out of a fall planting, lime in spring. To get the most out of a spring/summer planting, lime in fall.

That's why I won't waste a lot of money there this year. Hopefully the wheat and rape will come up some. This was a spur of the moment decision as that road was growing up. So, we tore it up last week with the ATV disk and tractor disk and I figured I can spend $20 on it this year and as you said, lime this spring.

I'm proud my results didn't end up like that research. This is something that will never be settled. Lime it with what you can,.. and watch it grow.
