Most important or favorite? This may sound odd, but I believe that my favorite piece of hunting gear has recently become this merino wool neck gaitor: http://www.sandsarchery.com/First-Lite-Wool-Neck-Gaiter-p/flng.htm

You can wear it as a neck gaiter, face mask, hood, bandana, do rag, or beanie hat. Very functional, practical and comfortable.

Quality, quiet clothing & footwear.

IMO, few things have benefitted TN deer hunters as much as the shift away from cotton to high-tech polyester fabrics.

A down jacket with a DWR treatment is great piece of gear for hunters. They compress to the size of a softball and are warm enough that you really don't need any additional insulation or mid layers for sitting stilll. That being said, a waterproof shell is highly recommended.

Best thing is, you can often find smokin' deal on down jackets during the off season. I'm talking $40-90 for a $200-$300 jacket. You can go with a outdoor brand such as Patagonia, GoLite, TNF, Mountain Hardware etc in a neutral color or you can get a hunting specific one from Kryptek, Kuiu, First Lite etc in a camo pattern. They all perform about the same and you can apply a DWR finish in your washing machine using Nikwax. Switching from multi layers to just a down jacket + shell was a game changer for me. Less stuff to carry, simple, light and comfortable. Also, once I switched to this insulation system, I was able to ditch the handmuff and handwarmers since the pockets on a down jacket are actually warmed by your body heat. The handmuff always annoyed me.
