What's everyone's opinion on the effect it will have on the deer. They just started last week on my lease. Looks like they'll be there most of the season.

? clear cutting
? select cutting

Either way you will see more deer for the first 3 yrs and after it gets thick the Deer have more places to hide. Eventually it thins back out.
As long as they leave some woods for the deer to travel you should have fun.
You could save more innocent lives by taking pens away from politicians than by taking guns away from law-abiding citizens.

It's select cut. Just wonder how it's going to change the deer from how they usually move. Usually the only people theses deer see is me now they will have a lot more human movement in the woods.

The physical logging can disrupt daylight patterns, but the logging will provide exceptional future habitat benefits. These benefits usually peak 3-8 years after the logging is complete.

If they just started logging they may be there for months. They typically fix the roads when they are done so you may have roads that are impassable during hunt season. My neighbor select-cut his 90 acres and a 4-wheeler couldn't travel the roads and the slash in the woods made it really tough to get a deer out. The 3 men leasing the property had to leave because they aren't in the best of health and couldn't get to their hunting spots or get a deer out if they got one. Your landowner probably left it to the logger to select the trees to be cut so the logger is going to cut the oaks and leave behind the less valuable trees so you may not have many acorns in the future but the browse will skyrocket.

They select cut my plateau property 2 years ago, during season. We still saw and killed a few deer, but over all sightings were down. In the 2 years since we have seen a huge increase in mature deer photos and harvest. Best thing to happen at our place, hands down.

A lot of people will not hunt a property that is being logged or has just been logged. Guess they think the deer have been run off. However these are the exact properties I look for when looking to pick up a new lease. Deer that have made that their home want to stay there. As log as they still have cover and food they will stay. With that being said, after a certain section of the woods has been cut and the loggers have move to another spot, use those roads to your advantage. Get some wheat, rye grass, clove, oats, anything and everything you can to get it sowed so they will have food. I love spreading clover or oats down the dirt roads and setting a stand up over them. Great spots to kill a good deer.
