I made a 6 hr road trip this weekend to see a rock concert and then pull a bunch of cameras and treestands from some public land that I'm not hunting this season. I mount my cameras about 10 ft up the tree and lock them with a python cable lock for added piece of mind. Well, I had some trouble unlocking one of the python cable locks. The lock was seized up and I busted the key off trying to unlock it. I was 1/2 mile from my truck near a swamp, it was hot and humid, there were bugs everywhere and I just wanted to recover my camera and get out of there. I considered my options, got out my Leatherman, pulled out the saw blade, and in a few strokes my camera was freed from the python cable.

I guess my point is this....buying a cable lock and passing it through the plastic holes on the back of a trail cam to lock the cam to a tree is basically a waste of money. In the back of my mind I always knew this, but now I've seen for myself how ridiculously easy it is to cut the plastic holes on the cam and defeat the lock. I won't be using any more python cable locks on trail cams unless I have the cam mounted in one of those steel security boxes.

The good news is that the camera is still perfectly usable. The latches were not damaged and the watertight integrity was not affected. I just can't lock it anymore, which is fine.

Yeah if someone wants to take something it is really hard to prevent it. I build my own security boxes but if someone wants to get the camera they can. Just have to work at it a little harder.
