Gonna finally get me some insurance on my boat this coming week.

I talked to them last week and told them how much I wanted on the trailer, boat and motor.

I forgot to ask the woman when I called but I assume you can also get insurance for stuff like if you hit a rock or whatever and rip the lower unit off?

I carry it on mine, and your homeowners might cover accidental damage etc.

I just got full coverage through State Farm on my boat, trailer, motor and contents. You have to be careful on which policies you get. I would ask them specific questions on the items you want coverage for.

Make sure they break it out by boat, motor and trailer and have realistic values for each.

A prop strike and lower unit damage caused by hitting underwater objects is usually covered. I would ask to make sure it is covered by the policy.

One thing a lot of people never consider is the contents of the boat also need to covered. If you capsize and loose your electronics, tackle boxes, and rods and reels you probably just lost several thousand dollars. I carry $3000 for the contents of my boat.

Good point Kirk.
I thought about all that except the contents.

Through Farm Bureau, you list out your boat, motor, trailer, and electronics and the specific amount of coverage you want on each. As far as rods, reels, baits, etc., those would all fall under your homeowners contents coverage. At least that is how my agent broke it down for me. It pretty much covers any physical damage that you would incur. It also covers the boat when not on the water. Examples, I am hauling my boat down to the lake and sideswipe someone: covered. A tree gets struck by lightening and falls on my garage, damaging my boat: Covered. Like Kirk said, I would ask questions to your agent, depending on the insurance company.

I use Bob at World Wide Marine. It's an agreed value policy that pays full value until the boat is 10 years old. It's broken down into, boat, motor, trailer and then contents. I took pictures and kept receipt from my purchases. I emailed them the pictures of depth finders and tackle. They are highly recommended on BBC. My boat is valued at $32,000 with I think $5000 more on contents which is low but that'll replace my rods and a little tackle. I pay about $400 a year. My boat is a 2008 model I bought in 2012 so it was 4 years old when I got the policy and the $32,000 reflects what I paid. I have $300,000 worth of coverage. I'd have to look up the policy to break it down further.

I've heard horror stories from people who use your regular insurance company like Allstate and others for boats. Everything I researched pointed towards using a marine company for insurance since they are boat specific. Bob beat the price I had at Allstate with better coverage even with our home, 3 vehicles and life insurance already with Allstate.

I had insurance with allstate, hit a log at 60+mph, tore up lower unit and blew the motor. Long story short they replaced lower unit, didnt fix prop or pay to fix motor. I use state farm now, my agent is a fishin buddy and has me insured pretty well although he can only do what the company allows him to. Think im gonna check out Bob.
