Shotgun slug barrel..got a question?

I'm looking for a slug barrel for my 12g 870. How much accuracy past 50yards can I expect from a smooth bore? Should I just spend the extra cash for the rifled one? Are the remington factory barrels ok or should I go with something like a Hastings? Really trying to be as cheap as possible. I probably wouldn't be shooting past 75-100yards. Any suggestions?

I have a Hasting fully rifled barrel with the scope mount on it and I can easily shot 2 inch groups with it at 100 yards with the Federal Premium slugs.... I have found that the group size dramitically increases when using the old type of slugs (pumkin ball).... Try to stay with the new trypes that are saboted....
I love the hasting barrel I have.... I have hunted about 3 or 4 times with it at Oak Ridge and at Fort Campbell and I have killed four deer with it....

I've had and used both smoothbore and rifled models. You want the rifled barrel. With it you will get better accuracy and the ability to take advantage of some of the premium sabot rounds.
I don't know if they're still made but you may want to check and see if Mossberg still makes a barrel to fit the Remington. They did in the past and that would be a money saving alternative as well as a good slug barrel.

I got to thinking and went to look at a Midway catalog. They list a cantilever rifled barrel for the Remington from Hastings for $249.99, Remington for $279.99, and Mossberg for $178.99. I'd save the money and go with the Mossberg unless someone has some experience with those barrels on the Remington that says otherwise. I currently have one of the Mossbergs on a Mossberg 500 and have no complaints about it or it's accuracy.

Ok thanks for the link! Been looking at the different size barrels and I don't know much about slug guns. What disadvantages/advantages would I have with different size barrels...say a 20" vs 24"?
