if he is 2.5 it would still be tempting but it would make the most sense to pass. if he was 3.5 I wouldn't hesitate to shoot, but that is me. Just curious, do you have a guess at what percent of 3 year old bucks you pass, give you another shot in following years?

It would really depend on the farm. I have a couple of farms where I can pass a 3 year old deer and probably have a 50-75% chance of seeing them again the next year. I have passed lots of bucks that I feel are 3 year olds, and have them show up again the following year. But honestly, at 4 1/2 they get a lot tougher to kill and probably half of them are only seen on trail camera. Once they get to 5 1/2+ they might as well be ghosts. Those critters are the biggest challenge in the woods.

I have another farm where that number would probably drop to 25% or so. It is a much smaller farm and is really just a transitional area where I don't have much control. I don't kill any bucks off of that farm myself. I let the kids hunt there and don't really restrict them as to what they can kill.

I don't have to kill deer like I used to. I honestly get more satisfaction out of managing the property and just knowing that they are there. Now, if a buck excites me and I think he is at least a 3 year old, I have no problem taking him. But oftentimes, I just get more excited about thinking what he will turn into the following year even if that means I never get to kill him. Typically, that is exactly what ends up happening. And that is perfectly ok with me.

But to answer your question...I'd take him. Looks to be 2-1/2 to me.
