In what way do you mean if you don't mind answering??

I'm curious too about your comment, Bowriter. I can understand the morning because I usually don't see deer until well after 1st light but in the evening, almost all the deer I see are just before legal light ends. If I were to leave the woods before it gets totally dark, I'd spook most of the deer I see.

I CAN understand one reason for not sitting until total darkness though and that is the fact that any deer you shoot at that time of day will have to be recovered and dealt with in the dark. That can turn into a real job.

Im with bowriter. I hunt as long as I want. Sometimes in bow season I stay til lunch. Other times if it doesn't feel right I get down early. I don't hunt many evenings unless the weather is right. I also don't walk in in the dark. I wait til I can see and slowly hunt my way to my stand. Then I quietly hunt my way up my stand. I have killed several right after I have pulled my gun or bow up. When I walked in in the dark I would never see deer til bout 8 oclock in the morning.

I have started to debate in my own mind whether hunting your way to your stand at first light maybe reaching your stand 10-15 min after legal light or to get to your stand 30 min before first light? My think is I can't see in the dark and spook deer near my stand walking in.. However sneaking in at first light you may can crouch down till the deer move on with out spooking, or maybe even get a shot.. Then again u may still spook them... And possibly been better off to jus get there early.. Spooking a deer doesn't impact what you see later a too much...

You make far more noise and appear far more unnatural using a light and walking around in the dark. if you wait until you can see where you are going and walk more quietly, you spook fewer deer. Why sit up there until slap dark? The last 10-minutes, you usually can't see to shoot anyway. I slowly hunt in and out. It has been very productive.

Answer me this: If it is more productive to hunt your way to and from a stand at first and last light respectively, why not just hunt that way (stalking) all day?

Just because your stand selection is so poor that you have to walk around the woods to find deer is no reason to be giving bad advice on a hunting forum \:D
If I am going I go to the trouble of hunting a spot and I think that spot is a spot worthy of hunting over, then I try to be positioned in that spot for the most prime opportunity. That is the general theory of treestand hunting. If I think my chances are better by stalking or waiting until a bit later in the morning (both of which I sometimes do) then that is different advice than making a blanket statement about hunting to and from a treestand. For example, What if you're hunting a bedding area? One of the most impressive hunters on this forum, String Music, pinpoints and hunts bedding areas and doesn't stalk his way into the woods. In fact, I believe he sometimes arrives hours before first light. Bobby Worthington as well as John and Chris Eberhart also advise arriving well before first light (sometimes hours) and staying put until or after complete darkness. There can be compromises with either approach, but your best bet is to evaluate each hunting situation rather than sticking with a singular approach (ex. Always waiting until first light).

generally 3-4 hours on private land. Ive done all day sits but only when drawn on WMA hunts specifically LBL. Ive seen more bucks on that land mid day than any others.

I find out what time the bucks are coming through and then try and focus on those times. That way, I am not in the stand during non productive times. Why sit there and count squirrels when I could be at home with the family or working maybe even scouting. Flexibility is the key here because bucks don't sometimes know when they are coming through. They could be chasing a doe and get sidetracked and miss their appointed times so sometimes you have to account for that. Other times they come through too early and mess up the schedule terribly. Then they have to wait till the next day to get killed. When its right, everything comes together and he comes through right on schedule. This makes everything better for all concerned. Well almost all.

Well heck, if you know what time the bucks are coming through, why have you not already killerized one? But wait, if the bucks don't when they are coming, how do you?

You know, after reading your post one sentence at a time, it appears you are about as confused as the bucks...and the rest of us.
