Considering the EHD outbreak back in '07, where does the herd in Tennessee stand in terms of recovery?

a few GW's have told me some places still haven't recovered,
and maybe never will...

I know parts of Trigg Co KY haven't and pockets of Stewart and Houston Co's in TN

I would argue that 2007 was, in fact a recovery. The herd "recovered" when it declined to what the land can actually support in many places, and the deer should be (and is, based on my observations) healthier for it. I have hunted units A, B, and L, before, during, and after, and really haven't seen a decline in sightings or success. I can say that I killed some a couple of really fatty does last season (in mzl and gun) with a negligible acorn crop.

I agree with a lot of what Mick wrote. I think the '07 die-off was a Godsend in some areas, especially in parts of Unit L. I was growing very concerned about the deer density I was seeing in '05 and '06.

I also believe the continued use of the liberal doe limits in Unit L has prevented the deer herds from rebuilding to those unhealthy pre-EHD levels, and the deer herd is healthier because of that.

I agree with BSK. In Lincoln County (Part of unit L) things have just gotten better and better. The numbers may be down a bit, but the quality is as good as anywhere in the country.

No, I did not kill any of these bucks. The top and bottom ones came off of one of my farms in 2012 (before I bought it). The rest came from the surrounding area. I have several more pics from the last few years, but these are good examples that the quality in Lincoln County is pretty dang good.

CAW,
Any chance you could you make a little room in your PM bucket?

Lincoln County has come on strong in the last few years as one of the new "trophy" hotspots of TN. I think it has a lot to do with the good mix of agriculture and hilly timber in the county--great food to grow antlers, yet also a lot of hilly woods to hide in and grow old.
