I've done a ton of research on this subject but have not been able to get one yet. My vote is for the M&P 15 with just the flat top so you can add your own sights. A lot of people like the Sportical but it lacks a forward assist and a dust cover. This is not a huge deal if you don't expect to really punish the gun and to be able to always keep it cleaned and lubed. However, in a long-term defense or SHTF scenario, that dust cover and forward assist will be what keeps the rifle running. AR styles get a bad rep as being slightly unreliable but that is if they are not taken care of slightly. Those two components will make it incredibly hard to keep clean in one of the two scenarios.

The bushmaster has the forward assist ant the dust cover for the same price as the s&w is it not a good one?

I dont know what the bushmaster runs but the regular m&p15 was a hair over $1000 last I looked and I believe the Sportical was around $800 or so. From everything that i've read, the bushmasters just are not as well made as the m&p or the colt that was mentioned above. That's not to say that they are bad but all the AR fan-boys seem to thumb their noses at the bushmasters.

You could also look at a Windham. Made by former owners/employees of Bushmaster. Supposedly a great rifle and can be had in the $750 - $1000 range.

I don't own one and have never considered buying one.. Have shot several and I think they are pretty neat.. I do like looking at em and all the options folks put on em.. I just don't see where I really need one and spending that kinda money on a gun at this point in my life.. Maybe one day when I have a lot more money laying around I might purchase one. I spend a lot of money on deer leases and deer stands and bass fishing. I got all the guns I need right now anyways.

I did pass up a deal bout 2 years ago on 2 high end ARs. I wish I would have bought em. Cause right after I passed them up that's when the craze happened and everybody was buying them. I know I could have more than doubled my money on em...

I have a couple in 556 and did have one in 300aac. Fun to shoot and even better to put one together yourself. Assembling it from parts can save you money or get just what parts you want for a nice high end build . My last one was a s.b.r built on a billet upper and lower made by cross machine in Lexington tn. http://Www.cmttac.Com good Tennessee folks that will work to make the customer happy.
