I'm considering a smoker and I'd like one with an offset fire box.

I can't go too expensive, but usually cheapest means poor quality.

Any suggestions for "most bang for the buck" on a consumer-sized model?

Oklahoma Joes are pretty good. Walmart (supringly) has one. Runs about $285. A friend has a one step better model of it but that will you around $450 at Academy.

My CharBroil model was $120 when I bought it at Home Depot 9-years ago. It's not the best, it doesn't have the largest surface area, and it bleeds heat pretty badly (uses more charcoal than it should). But I've learned to use it well, and it's served our family pretty well since the day I bought it. 9 times out of 10, it's a weeknight griller. But when I need it to smoke meat, it's pretty tame. I've done pork bellies for bacon, ribs, chickens, deer legs, chicken wings, pork shoulders, and jerky strips in this thing. The only thing I've had to do was buy a thermometer and thread the stud where the exhaust flap hangs.
