Okay, I'm considering the darkside. Looking at the Horton HD 150 crossbow package and can't quite decide. Is it a good crossbow and worth the cash as a starter package?

I have a Horton Legend SL and have been very satisified with it. At first I was a little dissapppointed but quickly discovered the anti crossbow hype was wrong and you actually do have to practice with them just like a bow. Now it works great.

I have the yukon, I got it on ebay, Love it.
I still wont take a shot over 25 yards ( wouldnt with a compound either \:\) and my hardest adjustment was that when you pulled the trigger, the arrow was so fast I cant track it with my eye the way I could with my coumpond, for some reason that was hard to get used too. just my experience

TNTony - don't rule out spending a little extra on the front-end and checking out the Excalibur recurves. KISS means a lot when you can do basically all you'll ever need to do to the xbow by yourself. The Phoenix, Exocet, or new Vortex would be ones to check out.

whatever you like. Horton is not a bad good brand. I would stay away from any recurves as they tend to be very wide at the bow and (with all that limb-tip travel) tend to be too jumpy for my liking. Have you looked at the entry level Tenpoint crossbows? Regardless of brand, look at bow width, weight and warrentee as key features (IMO).

Oh yea, ambidextrous safety might be a good feature too - I just saw a pic of a bolt through the foot - ouch!

Shoot them all! Then decide.

Each bow has it's advantages and disadvantages. One thing you will learn is that the hype about it being easy is a bunch of crap. It is still only a 30 yard weapon at best in the woods.

Oh! And welcome to the darkside.

Whichever you decide to get I personally wouldnt go over lets say 150 up to 175 lb range. Inspect closely upon completion of assembly (if you do it yourself).
They all seem to kill deer just fine.
Good luck and let us know.

"Light" is the cure for the "darkside". If more people understood crossbows I'll bet they'd give xbowers less crap.

DJ is 100% correct.... it isn’t a rifle - still a bow at heart. I gave you my opinion (based on using one year after year). There is no shame in shooting one but it isn’t a panacea either. Crossbows do have plusses alright but so do other bows inclusive of traditional equipment. I just hope you are realistic in your expectations and your choice fits your style.

I'm chiming in here way late.... but you can't go wrong with a Horton. I love mine... and yes, I have the Explorer 150 package. I did just swap our the red dot sight for a scope and I do like the scope a lot better. But Horton is the way to go.

;\) .. what!! straight up honesty... 25 or less is about as far as I can see from just about everywhere I have to hunt (across my field is an exception). I might manage 35 - 50 (and that would be threadin' one w/a M/L or centerfire (which ain't real good idea anyway)) from a place or two - but not many. I've shot a few 5 yards from the tree... I aint proud.

I tend to hide up in the thick where the deer are. It tickles the crap out of me to her people talking about 50 yards...

Tony,... i'm real late on this but if you want to check out my excalibur i would be happy to meet you or you can come up and shoot. I went to BPS in nashville and checked out every single crossbow they had hanging on the wall. I liked the excalibur due to weight, comfort, package available, and price for a top of the line product. I liked the recurve design over the cams also.

Either way,.. they are a blast to shoot.
