The only 98 mausers Ive ever known of were chambered in 7x57 or 8x57 but that cartridge sure looks like a .30-06 Springfield.

I would try to get my hands on a few similar cartridges and try to chamber them but never ever try to fire them. Heres another idea you might wanna try, get a caliper (preferably digital) and measure the inside of the bore so that you can know exactly what caliber it is..that way you can get a better idea of what its chambered for.

Alright, I'm here now who wants my autograph??

I'd cast it if I was uncertian. Excellent rifle, someone really knew what they were doing on that one.
Most military 98's that I have seen have stepped barrels. Although a gunsmith can remove the steps with a lathe, this barrel does not appear to have steps, thus suggesting that it is a sporter barrel. And, if it is, the caliber would normally be stamped somewhere on the barrel, possibly even under the wood as Tikka suggests.

I'm thinking along those same lines, nice, well done Mauser's are getting hard to find and somewhat pricy.

Best of all he loved the fall
The leaves yellow on the cottonwoods
Leaves floating on the trout streams
And above the hills
The high blue windless skies
Now he will be a part of them forever
