Impressive…..I would've expected longer times. How fast were you going? How was it being in a stairwell the whole time?

I don't know how to figure out the exact speed because I'm not precisely sure of the height of each floor. The building is said to be 350 feet, but I'm not sure if that is exactly accurate either, but it should be between 35 and 45 seconds per floor. I was rather surprised by the times myself, especially on the 2nd lap when it felt like we had slowed way down, but only took 2 minutes longer.

That stairwell is very narrow. In fact, to be a fire escape, its a stupid design. You would have a difficult time going down those stairs in anymore than a single file. If there were firemen trying to come up the stairs at the same time, especially with tanks on, it wouldn't work out at all. If you ever find yourself in Clark town having to use the fire escape, you better be the first person on those stairs because it could become a death trap, choke point in a matter of minutes with people stopping the traffic flow by opening the entry doors from various floors.

Anyway, like climbing all stairs, its mind numbingly boring. I don't wear ear buds when I'm training with the exception of using machines (stair climbers etc) because I've found that it quickly becomes a psychological crutch -like you can't function effectively without listening to music or you can't deal with pushing yourself if you have to actually think about what you are doing. My wife, for example, can't keep pace when running unless you has music to listen to at the tempo she wants to run. When it comes to applying that training to real world, say climbing up the side of a mountain, I like to have that meditative state dialed in so I can just go to that mental place where I'm putting out and getting it done. That being said, it sure would be nice to wear earbuds when doing those stairs, but I am going to resist.

My wireless earbuds failed on me the morning of the St. Jude half…..it sucked for about the first 3 miles, but I was weaned after that, and I've never worn them since.

I was just curious how "fast" you thought you were going….easy pace, or quick tempo?

I did it in a moderate, steady tempo, though, I'd like to try to speed bursts on it: 90 seconds all out, 60 seconds rest. That would better prepare me for doing the same task with half the oxygen.

Awesome! No way I could do that in any time to brag about. Just the fact I did it period would be good for me.

Revisited the stairwell on Saturday afternoon.

Lap 1: We did at a moderate pace to get warmed up. 14:10

Lap2: We did in a 90 seconds max effort/ 60 seconds rest style. This was to emulate the same function with less oxygen. It was a real arse kicker. It took 5 sets of 90/60 to get to the top, which translates into 7:50 of working time for 33 flights. Brutal.

Lap 3: was a slog of 13:23, but felt like it was 30 minutes after the previous effort.
