Notice the reader's comments below that article. Several mention Papa Kayjoe's in Centerville. I ate there about a month ago while up that way turkey hunting. I must say it was the worst BBQ I've ever eaten, no doubt about it. As one of my buds had warned me about, it reminded me of "crockpot BBQ" where the meat had been overlooked to the point it was liquidy/mushy if you will. The meat had the same consistency and texture as tuna in a can. I was VERY unimpressed to say the least. The taste was not terrible, but no smoke flavor coupled with wet mushy meat was a poor excuse for BBQ, much less consideration as some of the best BBQ anywhere, much less here in TN. The more I see Papa Kayjoe's and Rendezvous in these "top lists", the more I realize these writers have no clue what real BBQ is about.

Great choice! Her sandwich is one of the best around, if not the best on the right day. Report back and let us know what you think.

I tried Helen's today for lunch. I had a jumbo sandwich with beans. The meat was moist and tender, had good smoke flavor. I usually get mild and hot mixed on my sandwiches, I liked the sauce, it had enough kick to it. I liked the sandwich, wouldn't say it was the best I've had but it was good and I understand BBQ may vary from one cooking to the other a little. I would definitely stop again if in the area. I would give it a 9.0 out of 10 and would recommend it.

I thought Payne's in Memphis had her slightly beat, at least today. I would like to try again sometime to get another taste.

I've eaten Scott's BBQ in Lexington since before I could walk. Glad to see it on the list. Still prefer Texas BBQ any day of the week, though.

My thoughts exactly. Payne's has the best slaw ever.

If there was a perfect BBQ joint it would have Helen's bbq, Payne's slaw, beans from Sam's Humbolt, and sauce from Scott's.

I've eaten my share of Scott's BBQ. No doubt some of the best Q in the country.

Jon, are you talking Texas BBQ pork or brisket? If you like the pork better, what are the differences in TX and TN?
