You said that the caliber was not indicated on the case, but are there no markings, numbers, etc. on the head of the case? I don't ever recall there not being something on the head, even on military brass. Also, it looks like the bullets may be FMJ.?

If there is no reference to caliber only other markings on the case, and the bullet is FMJ, which it appears to be in the picture, it is obviously a military caliber, which at least narrows it down somewhat. If you can identify the markings on the case more specifically, with the other clues, we make be able to identify the caliber.

You may have allready done this but on one of my old Mausers you had to take the action out of the stock because the cal. was stamped on the bottom of the barrel. Have you compared the bullet to an 8x57 ? I'd cast it if I was uncertian. Excellent rifle, someone really knew what they were doing on that one. Most military 98's that I have seen have stepped barrels. Although a gunsmith can remove the steps with a lathe, this barrel does not appear to have steps, thus suggesting that it is a sporter barrel. And, if it is, the caliber would normally be stamped somewhere on the barrel, possibly even under the wood as Tikka suggests.
