As I didn't draw any UT tags this year, and have my vacation time already set aside, has anyone hunted buffalo on a game farm?
(It will be a minimum of another 10 years before I "might" have a chance at a wild buffalo in UT.)
I don't want a high fence, go shoot the tame animal hunt. Ideally, it would be on one of the Indian Reservations with 50,000 acres, but over the years I haven't made any of those draws either.
MO and SD seem to have a lot of large ranches with herds.
Anyone ever done this?

No but I would as the meat is great & if you can afford it id do it with out any problems. I have no problem gathering my own food & that's what you would be doing. A wild hunt would be more difficult more than likely & take longer to draw.

For the same price range, you can do down to Mexico and hunt truly free range buffalo on giant ranches. This outfitter services those type of hunts: http://www.colburnandscottoutfitters.com

I have not, but that is one hunt I would not blink twice about paying to go on if I had the $$. Buffalo is delicious.

Thanks Poser. I don't see buffalo on their website, but will drop them an email.
It would be nice to be able to drive to a hunting location so I can easily transport the meat back in my truck. 1,000 animal is a lot of meat!
Besides waiting another 10 years for a UT tag, it will be put on up there in age and that is a tough, tough hunt in the Henry Mountains.

Lance,

Yeah, you'll have to email them. There was an episode of Meateater in 2012 where they hunted Buffalo in Mexico and used that outfitter: http://themeateater.com/2012/hunting-with-jay-and-darr/

With the Outfitter based in AZ, I'd imagine you could drive to AZ and ride into Mexico and back with the outfitter which would allow you to haul your meat both ways rather than shipping. The biggest factor down there is the heat. I believe that the standard practice is that, once you find the buffalo, wait it out until evening before shooting one. Then you'll spend the entire night getting them butchered and packed out. They do roam hug areas. I believe the ranches that the outfitters use are 100s of thousands of acres.

Your other option is to put in for the AK draw. Odds are low, but its only $12 a year to apply and I don't think it is a priority points system. In that case, you are hunting buffalo in an area roughly the size of Ohio. You need a bush pilot who flies the area frequently and has an idea where to drop you based upon very recent sightings.

I've been applying for years now in the lottery for a Custer SD buffalo permit. With the recent restructuring of the draw to allocate more tags for residents I feel I have a better chance of drawing a Tennessee Elk tag.
