have this mauser model 98 in a closet that I have no idea what the caliber is.. Its a custom stocked gun and appears to be a 30-06 or 338

any guesses?

Neither the gun nor the shells have a caliber on them??

I think the only other shell I have around is a 223 though...

Beautiful rifle....Just be sure you know the caliber before firing it or both it and you might not be so beautiful. Just because the ammo is with the rifle doesn't always mean it's for that rifle. That's just one clue.

A Good Gunsmith can tell for sure. $;\)$

If the barrel has been changed out to a custom it should be caliber stamped,might be hard to see though.Most likely along the side of the barrel near or just in front of the action,possible along the top of the barrel all in small markings.

If it still wears a military barrel ie "Stepped" barrel vs a smooth taper contour,it most likely won't be cal stamped.Unless who ever did the custom sporter job stamped it either to the above or somewhere on the action.

If it is still a military barrel one can likely norrow it down to a handful of calibers however a Good GunSmith is the Safeest route. $;\)$

Looks like a very good sporter job.
