have this mauser model 98 in a closet that I have no idea what the caliber is.. Its a custom stocked gun and appears to be a 30-06 or 338

any guesses?

Neither the gun nor the shells have a caliber on them??

Need better pics. Do a chamber cast and measure it up.

Beautiful rifle....Just be sure you know the caliber before firing it or both it and you might not be so beautiful. Just because the ammo is with the rifle doesn't always mean it's for that rifle. That's just one clue.

A Good Gunsmith can tell for sure. ;\)

If the barrel has been changed out to a custom it should be caliber stamped, might be hard to see though. Most likely along the side of the barrel near or just in front of the action, possible along the top of the barrel all in small markings.

If it still wears a military barrel ie "Stepped" barrel vs a smooth taper contour,it most likely won't be cal stamped.Unless who ever did the custom sporter job stamped it either to the above or somewhere on the action.

If it is still a military barrel one can likely norrow it down to a handful of calibers however a Good GunSmith is the Safeest route. ;\)

Looks like a very good sporter job.

You said that the caliber was not indicated on the case, but are there no markings, numbers, etc. on the head of the case? I don't ever recall there not being something on the head, even on military brass. Also, it looks like the bullets may be FMJ.?

If there is no reference to caliber only other markings on the case, and the bullet is FMJ, which it appears to be in the picture, it is obviously a military caliber, which at least narrows it down somewhat. If you can identify the markings on the case more specifically, with the other clues, we make be able to identify the caliber.

You may have allready done this but on one of my old Mausers you had to take the action out of the stock because the cal. was stamped on the bottom of the barrel. \:o Have you compared the bullet to an 8x57 ?
I'd cast it if I was uncertian. Excellent rifle, someone really knew what they were doing on that one.

Most military 98's that I have seen have stepped barrels. Although a gunsmith can remove the steps with a lathe, this barrel does not appear to have steps, thus suggesting that it is a sporter barrel. And, if it is, the caliber would normally be stamped somewhere on the barrel, possibly even under the wood as Tikka suggests.

The only 98 mausers Ive ever known of were chambered in 7x57 or 8x57 but that cartridge sure looks like a .30-06 Springfield.

I would try to get my hands on a few similar cartridges and try to chamber them but never ever try to fire them. Heres another idea you might wanna try, get a caliper (preferably digital) and measure the inside of the bore so that you can know exactly what caliber it is..that way you can get a better idea of what its chambered for.
