spitndrool,

Ya, I think 3 1/2. Too narrow of a waistline and not enough depth in the chest to be older.

DoubleD,

Just the way the shadows are playing. I've got a bunch more pics of him, and his body structure is fine.

BSK,

Knowing that you have killed both larger antlered, as well as older fully mature bucks, why not let this buck live at least another year (assuming he's 3 1/2)?

(I wouldn't necessarily suggest that to a hunter who has never killed a 3 1/2-yr-old buck, but in your case, why not let this one live a year longer?)

Should add that I believe ANY 3 1/2-yr-old buck should be "available" for harvest in most QDM programs, but believe many experienced hunters can further enhance the quality of their personal hunting experiences by raising the bar a tad more.

Mup,

I'm thinking 125 to 130, but if he breaks 130 I wouldn't be shocked.

(gross scores)

Great question Wes. And the answer is multifacetted:

1) I'll be the first to admit, I'm one of those hunters who would like to shoot at least one buck every year. I pour a considerable amount of money, time and heart into my property, and I would like to get something in return each year. Plus, my hunting time is very limited. I basically only hunt two weeks per year.

2) Due to our ability to manipulate the habitat any way we like, we've been able to produce a patch of habitat that appears to be extremely attractive to deer, especially older bucks. For whatever reason, with every passing year we are drawing more and more bucks to the property during the hunting season. Because of that, we can now afford to take a number of middle-aged bucks yet still have enough mature bucks using the property to produce a realistic opportunity at a wall-hanger every year for every hunter and produce the herd dynamics we want. What I'm getting at is, we have so many older bucks using the property during the season, and kill so few of them, that the harvest of 3 1/2 year-old bucks does not appear to be decreasing the number of 4 1/2+ year-old bucks using the property each year.

For example, in 2003 we photographed four 3 1/2+ year-old bucks using our property, of which we only killed one. In 2004 we photographed eight 3 1/2+ year-old bucks, of which we killed four. In 2005 we photographed seven 3 1/2+ year-old bucks, of which we killed three. In 2006 we photographed eleven 3 1/2+ year-old bucks, of which we only killed one.

The population of 3 1/2+ year-old bucks is on a general upward swing, regardless of our harvests, hence why not ejoy shooting them? And a 3 1/2 year-old buck still makes me very happy. Maybe someday I will limit myself to only mature bucks, but for now the 3 1/2s are still challenging and entertaining.
