Well, Saturday I'm about halfway into a 3 mile jog - sharp pain in the upper/outer left calf... finally had to stop and massage a bit then fought it for 1.5 going home. SORE that night - little better Sunday...stretched and tried to run yesterday and 3/4 mile in pretty severe pain

Going to a GP today just to be 100% sure its not a clot issue of some kind - no reason to think it is except that when you look up calf pain the medical folks all scream CLOT CLOT CLOT so, at a minimum I have injured something dangit so, my 1st to be ever 5k coming up in 3 weeks may be a 5k walk \:\(

Good news is that calf injuries tend to heal fairly quickly. That's one tough muscle. Stay off of it as much as possible, ice it for 20 minutes at a time, drink lots of water and eat extra protein. If you can't stand to not work out, ride a bike or hit a rowing machine.

Well, my buddy who's a NP said it was "likey" a severe pull...steroid shot - 3 or 4 days off - if that doesn't do it then its obviously a referral situation. Still sore today - outside of left calf right up by where it connects to the side of the knee

level I/II gastrocnemius tear

Oh well, they said no running + yada yada yada for 6+ weeks.. Also said if I could do other workouts without pain go for it SO I'll at least be doing T25 Speed workouts, bicycle, elliptical and resistance..

Hurts mainly pushing off of the ball of my foot (run position) so hopefully I can push on thru T25 etc without issue.. We'll see today \:\)

That sucks, man. Injuries are frustrating. I'm guessing that, after recovery, you are going to have to spend a lot of time warming up and stretching that muscle before doing anything.

Really hate the for you Kimber. I know you've been working hard at it, and seeing your posts about exercise helps keep my focused. Hang in there and try not to push the injury too hard. Good luck!!

I was actually doing more warmups then I ever had in my life already. Calf raises from a low heel point - hamstring stretches - couple more leg stretches too.. I "guess" the only other thing I could do differently is walk a few minutes too before jogging?
Pretty discouraging when considering the weiner pace I was jogging at anyway. Previously I had run 8+ mph on .5 to 1 mile runs on a treadmill as part of an HIIT thing I was doing - NEVER warmed up. Not sure but maybe the fact that I had not run on the road in 30 years got me.. WHo knows

Thanks.. There's some good in the "current" as well I guess. I have FINALLY gotten a grasp on my diet - 230 to 198 as of this morning... Now, I've lost a lot of muscle too since I really backed off on resistance, did lots of cardio, eating right but - that was my goal (losing weight).
Hoping to see 178-180.. I'm planning to let joints rest a little to that point then hit P90X hard by or before fall and thru the winter. Maybe putting on some muscle weight the right way then but for now, down in the 170's is the goal.

Yeah, the pavement can be hard on you. I usually walk as fast as I can for a quarter or mile or so before I start running. When I transition into running, its initially at a slower pace that what I was walking at. It will also help if you stretch then do something for 2-5 minutes to get the blood flowing (jumping rope is great for this, but you could also do a quick round of air squats, push ups, pulls ups and/or situps) and then stretch again before running. Once you have got the blood flowing and then stretch, you're muscles will be warmed up.
