Got a couple families in our church here getting set up to start a few first-time hives. I ran a couple hives in a VERY amateur way about a dozen years ago. Had to give them up when the kids' pups kept sticking their heads in the hive to look around, would get stung, and I'd be out an emergency vet bill.

Seems you never ever see used hives or equipment go past. I was just wondering if maybe a top-bar system would be a simpler, less expensive way to go. I know it's not supposed to give as much honey, but I'd be in it more for the garden and pleasure of having them around.

Beekeeper or other experts got advisement?

Know nothing about keeping them but am considering asking someone to put one on my place for pollination of my garden.

I have several hives but no top bars. They should be a less expensive route to go. If you only want one or two colonies then they should work fine. Just don't treat or paint the inside!
One of my students of bees did the top bar thing. I caught him a swarm and installed in his hive. The next morning they packed up and left. I did't realize that he had treated the outdside and inside with linseed oil. I told him no sweat, I would grow him a nuc hive that would have frames that would fit his top bar. I made a modified nuc hive with frames like his top bar and in few weeks we installed them after he had scrubbed and scrubbed and aired out his top bar hive

You can build them out of scrap stuff or even go fancy if you choose. Just have to be very careful when it is hot and you move frames, since the comb has no extra support.

That's very cool info, Woodyard, thanks.

This may be a more complex question than I think, but when it comes to harvesting a top bar, do you just decide to take a bar's worth and leave the rest, or what? How do you determine how much comb you can take without being detrimental to the hive?

I still like that old hive rig that Gil found in his attic. That was very cool!

I built a top bar about 10 years ago.. put a swarm in it and they stayed about 3-4 years.. I also put some observation windows in it on the sides.. depending on how much honey they put up, depends on how much you can harvest, I always leave a full box for them to winter on.. sometime I leave the whole hive full for them to winter on and extract in the spring.. you will need to do the crush and strain method with the top bar.. we are having a bee field day saturday just a little south of you if you want to come..
I'll be at the river fishing..LOL

Remember the field day at David Kersey's Saturday April 26th from 9 am until.
This would be a good event for all the new-bees to attend.
Hope everyone has a good day.

Dang, Press, would love to, but I'm covered up. Running a pulled pork plate fundraiser all weekend for our teen group's mission trip to South Dakota.

Heck, we should have coordinated!
