I think body type has a lot of impact on what the body can take....I know that , according to tests, my heart is as strong as a horse, but being over 200 pounds and rather thick in the legs and shoulders/chest, I am not conducive to running. I do not have a runner's body...long legs, thin upper body, etc.

I do enjoy running because it is much like setting any goal and achieving it. At 57 years old, I am too old to start setting weight lifting goals, imo, so instead I try to run distances at a decent time......I'll never win a longer race and never be able to run even a half marathon, imo, but I can enjoy a nice 5K now and then with friends...

No doubt that some folks are made for running some aren't. short guys, men with big thighs and calves will struggle at distance.their strides and too short. men are over 40 have another mark against them when it comes to posting great times. But the great thing about running is that everyone who does can benefit from it, regardless what the clock says. I run a few races and enjoy it, but my favorite runs are the 7.5 mile run from my farm home through the winding country roads of Bedford and marshall county. no watch, no times. only a destination to be reached

I don't buy all that hype about "body types" for running. Yeah, the Kenyans are good at it, and you can bet the skinny guys will be winning medals. But I worked the Memphis Marathon one year, and the winner of that race was about 5'-8" and weighed about 160 lbs. He thundered down the road and never once gave up the lead. The Kenyans were bounding like gazelles behind him, but never caught up. It's all about endurance.

If we were to take two runners with identical levels of fitness and trim 5 pounds of fat off one of the runners (note I said fat—you don't want to lose muscle), then the lighter runner will run faster. Why? Imagine grabbing a five-pound dumbbell and strapping it to your low back. Could you run? Yes. But think of how much harder it would be ? quite a bit harder.

How the craze for running ever longer distances can DAMAGE the heart, but......................
"Professor Boyett stressed that although endurance exercise training can have harmful effects on the heart, 'it is more than outweighed by the beneficial effects'."

The good news is that endurance training is increasingly shifting away from long slow distance (LSD) cardio based training and/or moving increasingly towards strength for endurance-based training and anaerobic intensity for endurance. Many of the latest models never have you running more than 50% of your anticipated distance and spending increasing time doing much shorter, super intense and tempo sessions rather than long, slow sessions. Most of the damage done to the heart comes from the endless hours of LSD training, but long runs here and there in the form of races and competition should have little negative effect.
A modern endurance athlete may have the actual miles under their feet scaled back to 40-60% of their previous volume and spending more time in supplemental training wrapped up in sessions ranging from 10-90 minutes.

very few marathons like that i assure you. age is a is huge. 40 is the kiss of death for a competitive runner
