Just out of curiosity what's your opinions on downrange energy between a 5 shot long beard and hevI 7's? At 30-40yds. Bigger pellet vs. Heavier pellet is what I'm kind of wondering.

wouldn't drop the money on a hevi so I wouldn't know

If a lead #5 will kill at 50 then I wouldn't worry about 30 or 40 at all

Right, I was just curious as to the down range energy. With a smaller heavier pellet or a larger lighter pellet.

From a physics stand point the 7s will retain velocity the farther out it goes due to size. I'd say they are pretty close you just have 2x the amount of pellets with the 7s

Keep in mind that a majority of the pellets in the "hevi 7" shells are actually 7.5 or smaller. They will shoot a dense pattern, but I would not trust them past 40 yards. They are not THAT much heavier than lead. Lead is about 10.5-11 g/cc and Hevi is 12 g/cc. So you aren't getting a huge increase in density and you are getting a pretty substantial decrease in size. A lead 5 (true size) will have more energy than a hevi 7.5 - but substantially fewer pellets.

Keep in mind that the Federal Hevyweight shells are 15 g/cc -- so you do get an appreciable increase in mass for the pellet size. A federal HW 7 will substantially out perform a lead 5.

I'll take the LB 5's over the 7 Hevi any day. I hunted with the 7's for two years and just never really like them. For paper and numbers they are king, but true on bird performance at ethical ranges I think lead 5's perform better. This is just my opinion, and I no others have theirs. Lead density is right at 11 g/cc vs 12 g/cc for Hevi, not much difference at all. I saw a test were a guy shot a 1/2 piece of drywall at 40 yds. with 7 Hevi and the LB 5's. About 12 pellet of the 7''s pasted thru, and between 1/2 to 3/4 of the load of 5's pasted thru. Hevi 6 compares a whole lot better to 5 lead than the 7's do. Now if you moved on to the HW 7 at 15 g/cc or TSS at 18 g/cc it's a whole different ball game. I personally just like a bigger shot size, and like I said earlier, that's just me. Turkeys heads ain't made of drywall and I promise that any of them will work. Some people love the 7's, in the hevi's I like the straight 6's and the mag blend the best.
