A deer or two looking like that isn't a problem and is common for most areas. Remember that every age-class of deer in any given location has around a 10% annual mortality rate due to disease and predation. If one out of ten deer look like that, that's just Nature's way.

I suppose so Bryan, but the thing is I never get photos of deer looking like that on my place and this year there is quite a few, hence my concern. At least I can feel much better about drilling the heck out of does the last few years!!!!

"Quite a few" would be a problem.

The heat is soo bad that i expect some of them to really look like they are sufferring .......However some of the best looking deer i have seen are on pics on this website. I think some deer have faired quite well judging from the photos.

I believe early fall is gonna be tougher on em this year without rain. Maybe you need to continue to hammer them this season.

Well with the rather LARGE fawn recruitment I have seen, If I don't see evidence of an EHD problem I'll be cutting does some more.

I just looked at that doe in the second and third pic again, perhaps this is a mother nursing her first season of offspring? I noticed that in both the 2nd and 3rd pics that her teats are visible possibly indicating she is nursing. In both cases they don't look any worse than some of the other pics I've seen around the forum. That big huge cow in the top may be too old to have fawns or they'd likely be with her since thats an August pic. Were that the case, she ain't got nothing to do except get fat and healthy.

After reading AlanP's information about the current EHD outbreak involving serotype 2 EHD, I'm now beginning to think the large number of "emaciated deer" pics I'm seeing posted are actually deer with the chronic form of EHD.
