Picked up a Browning BAR in 30-06 last night. He gave me 2 boxes of 165gr Hornady sst's. I will probably shoot 150gr out of it because that's just the most grains i've ever shot out of any of my guns.

I'm pretty partial to my Encore .270 and will probably use that most of the time still but have always wanted a BAR so found a decent deal on this one.

I thing you will find it will like and shoot better with the 165gr. bullets, even up into the 180gr. range. Most everyone I know that owns an 06 shoots the 165's.
They do the job well on whitetails.

Love the '06, I currently have two and both them love 180gr pills. I've shot 150s and 165's even tried some 125BT's in one of them, they shot them pretty good but seem to flavor the 180s.

Great caliber with plenty of reloading data, brass is plentiful, you can get ammo in almost in store that sells ammo.

Now I do have a Mod 742 Woodsmaster that likes the 180 gr's.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm going to stick with the 165gr and see how it likes them. Got a Nikon Buckmaster mounted on it, hopefully get to shoot it this weekend! Got a new Buckmaster on the 7mm08 also so maybe ill get a chance to shoot them both this weekend.

The 30-06 is one of the all-time greats. You have a huge range of bullet weights and constructions available that will let you hunt the majority of animals on the entire Earth really. Equally important is that cheap ammo can be found anywhere. I agree that the 165 grain is probably the best all-around deer bullet weight...

Oddly having given this fine cartridge such a glowing review, I've never owned one and honestly most likely never will. To justify that staement, I think it's the very practicality of the cartridge that I don't like. I certainly can't justify my lack of enthusiasm for the 06 with a lack of performance though. My lack of enthusiasm for the cartridge is more emotional than rational. Put it this way - if we compare cartridges to women, I see the 30-06 as a nice looking, but far from beautiful, dependable wife that will always be by your side doing just what she should do - while say the 257 Weatherby is the mysterious and drop dead gorgeous mistress with dark eyes that make you forget what your name is and drool all over yourself when you look at her. \:\) Since straying to a more exciting rifle is not a sin as it would be with marriage, I'll take exciting over dependable practically every time. \:\)

My favorite hunting setup is my 1977 Savage 110 30-06 with 165gr SST's.
I've dropped many of deer with it.
The furthest i've ever had a deer run is 10' with my 30-06. It was right at 200 yds and it jumped in the air twice and fell over dead.
I won't go deer hunting without my Savage 110 except bow hunting.

But i've grown so accustomed to my gun i've very partial to it and I know it better then any other gun.

Great round. I'm alive because of it. My Dad carried a Garand in New Guinea and the Philippines and tells a story how a buddy used a real Browning BAR to save their patrol one night. It's killed thousand of enemy soldiers and TONS of deer.

I wish I still had my old 742 but I sold it to help buy a wedding ring 34 years ago.
