I have never owned one until last night. My dad owns one and likes it, i know several who like them and then i know several who absolutely hate them.

Picked up a Browning BAR in 30-06 last night. He gave me 2 boxes of 165gr Hornady sst's. I will probably shoot 150gr out of it because that's just the most grains i've ever shot out of any of my guns.

I'm pretty partial to my Encore .270 and will probably use that most of the time still but have always wanted a BAR so found a decent deal on this one.

I have 1. I look at the 30-06 as a jack of all trades, and a master of none. Which isn't a bad thing.

I first started hunting with a Remington 760 in 30-06 when I was 12 in PA. Not an optimal first gun for a kid but it was all we had. I have been partial to this caliber ever since.

I really like 165's out of the 30-06 I shoot 165 gr. Accu Bonds and they have always worked great for me. A little more recoil than the 150's but not too bad.

I thing you will find it will like and shoot better with the 165gr. bullets, even up into the 180gr. range. Most everyone I know that owns an 06 shoots the 165's.
They do the job well on whitetails.

It's my go to caliber rifle. I'm starting to try and work up a hand load for my Tikka in 30-06, before I even shoot a factory loaded case thru it. I like the 150 gr Core-Lokt's thru my other rifle, but I want something else for the Tikka, but will still be 150 gr pills tho.

It is the parent of the cartridge in your screen name "rem270" and many other popular cartridges, and was the granddaddy of the short action .308 Win and it's offspring. It is a great round.

I own a .270 and .30-06. I like them both. The .270 is a bolt gun, and the '.06 is a Rem 760 pump. My '.06 shoots very well with the 165s. My .270 gets fed 140gr bullets. Both kill deer very dead, and other than action type, any difference between the two on deer-sized game is splitting hairs.

I use a 168 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip over H4350 in my 30-06. And before someone wants to bad mouth the ballistic tip, take look at a sectioned 168 and note how thick the jacket is. Not all ballistic tips are created equal.

From Left to Right:
7mm 120gr BT, 7mm 150gr BT, 7mm 140 AB, 30cal 168gr BT, 30cal 180gr BT.

Probably the most versitle cartridge out there for big game.... shoot anything from 130 gr all the way up to and over 220 gr bullets... It has been around so long because it works... 108 years to be exact.

many fine cartridges made from it... 20-06, 270, 35 Whelen, 338-08, but none as versitle as the original...

If I could only have one calibur for big game, it would be the 30-06.

30-06 is all you need for north American big game hunting with maybe the exception of big coastal grizzlies and brown bears.

Not a fan of the caliber either. But that's all my dad uses and we have tested a lot of bullets and different grains and I would go with a 165 grain bullet. As said above will kill anything and bullets are everywhere. And I love a browning bar so I don't blame you for picking one up.

Love the '06, I currently have two and both them love 180gr pills. I've shot 150s and 165's even tried some 125BT's in one of them, they shot them pretty good but seem to flavor the 180s.

Great caliber with plenty of reloading data, brass is plentiful, you can get ammo in almost in store that sells ammo.

The 30-06 is one of the all-time greats. You have a huge range of bullet weights and constructions available that will let you hunt the majority of animals on the entire Earth really. Equally important is that cheap ammo can be found anywhere. I agree that the 165 grain is probably the best all-around deer bullet weight...

Oddly having given this fine cartridge such a glowing review, I've never owned one and honestly most likely never will. To justify that staement, I think it's the very practicality of the cartridge that I don't like. I certainly can't justify my lack of enthusiasm for the 06 with a lack of performance though. My lack of enthusiasm for the cartridge is more emotional than rational. Put it this way - if we compare cartridges to women, I see the 30-06 as a nice looking, but far from beautiful, dependable wife that will always be by your side doing just what she should do - while say the 257 Weatherby is the mysterious and drop dead gorgeous mistress with dark eyes that make you forget what your name is and drool all over yourself when you look at her. \:\) Since straying to a more exciting rifle is not a sin as it would be with marriage, I'll take exciting over dependable practically every time. \:\)

My favorite hunting setup is my 1977 Savage 110 30-06 with 165gr SST's.
I've dropped many of deer with it.
The furthest i've ever had a deer run is 10' with my 30-06. It was right at 200 yds and it jumped in the air twice and fell over dead.
I won't go deer hunting without my Savage 110 except bow hunting.

But i've grown so accustomed to my gun i've very partial to it and I know it better then any other gun.

Great round. I'm alive because of it. My Dad carried a Garand in New Guinea and the Philippines and tells a story how a buddy used a real Browning BAR to save their patrol one night. It's killed thousand of enemy soldiers and TONS of deer.

I wish I still had my old 742 but I sold it to help buy a wedding ring 34 years ago.

I'm curious why most like the 165 gr vs the 150 gr.?

Some years ago somebody done a lot of research & determined the 168g or maybe it was the 165g was a better choice for over all energy ,accuracy & flat shooting 150g vs 180g. I have shot deer with 150g & 165g & at the distances I couldn't tell any difference but Im sure as the range gets longer a person could. I shoot 150g most of the time in my 300wm,less recoil & plenty for deer

Adolf Hitler was NOT a fan of the 30-06 on this day in history!

I hand load 165gr Serria Game Kings for mine. I tried several different weights and styles and the 165 out performed all the others except for the 168gr ballistic tip Nosler. I like the expanision and penetration I get at close range with the Gaame King better than what I got from the ballistic tip.

I have one just because everyone should have one.

It's my backup rifle, and I know I can find ammo at pretty much any place I try. Well, pre-Obambam anyway.

It is boring and does anything you ask of it, just not in a sexy way and that's just fine. It will not win many contests, but it will never come in last.

That sums it up nicely ratsnakeboogy. There are reasons it's been around as long as it has.

Huge 30-06 fan here - I've got a Browning BAR rifle and a Garand. My grandfather used a real BAR in WWII. The only caliber I keep more rounds stockpiled is 22.

The 220 grain Core Lokts are fun to shoot, you can tell the difference between them and the 180's and 150's.

My 12 year old son likes to shoot the Garand like it is a 22.
