I'm a 1st time food plotter and really don't have a clue to what I am doing other than getting a soil test from the Whitetail Inst. Haven't got it back yet but while getting the soil sample I notice it was super rocky, every hole I dug in the ground had rocks! I'm talking about little rocks, like marble size! It's on the side of a ridge, it's kind of on the top with a little slop! Will a plot grow there? It will get plenty of sunlight!! Any thoughts would be awesome before I sink $ into the seed!!

sunlight will be the biggest thing. but there are a lot of seeds now that are made to be grown in bad soil. my take a little more fertilizer and lime but you can make it work if you want to put the time and money in it. there is also seed that don't need as much sunlight. do a lot of research on different seeds and what you need to do to make it work. don't just go in blind, that's a way to spend a lot of money that is not needed.

I grow plots in terrible rocky mountain ground. It can be done. There is alot that goes into your question though. Do one thing first, order the QDMA Food Plot book.

Go to UT Extension Service office or online and check out the publications available and talk with the Ext. agent. The local Farmer's CO-OP is also a good source of information and they will help you with processing your soil samples. Something relatively inexpensive would be buckwheat in the summer (which will improve your soil)and wheat(use feed wheat instead of certified seed and it will save you some bucks) in the fall.

x2 on the buckwheat, great soil builder for sure.

However, I would be cautious about using "feed wheat" instead of a certified "seed wheat". Very easy to introduce unwanted weeds that are mixed in the feed wheat. Been there, done that....not worth the few $ saved per bag IMO. Probably spend more on Roundup trying to get rid of the weeds than the initial savings.

I plant food plots yearly in awful rocky soil. I stick mostly to clover, oats, and wheat but it comes up and looks great. I have a great looking stand of clover coming on right now with the recent rain and warmer temps.
