Yes very interesting. I have never used any round up. And this will be the third year for the garden at this house. It is 70'x40'. It does seem like each year the weeds are less. The first year I had to do as cayman said and use a weedeater. But last year I was able to keep it pretty neat with the tiller and ho. At the old house our garden was much smaller and easier to keep all weeds and grass out.
The hardest thing for me is to keep the deer out. So this year I am putting up a 7.5' net fence from Memphis net and twine. Hope that helps.

Just a final thought - Roundup does zero good unless sprayed directly on plants that are actively growing. Right now, even the weeds aren't growing much. If you want to spray, wait until we're further into growing season.

yes roundup is a contact herbicide and not a pre emergent. Won't do any good now or on new weeds that come up in the summer.

roundup will work now, it just slower on the early growing grass/weeds that are emerging , a person is much better off if they will wait until the last moment to apply chemical

Pulled all my weeds today. Guys, I keep beehives about four feet from my garden. That's another reason I can't go the chemical route. But good luck to all, no matter how you skin that cat.

For those wanting to go the non-chemical route, I've seen folks use the geotextile ground covering stuff when planting to choke out weeds. Looks like a bit of a hassle to install, but perhaps it's worth it. Just remember that mulch and other dark surfaces can generate a lot of heat, so you have to be careful about "cooking" your plants and killing them.

I just have a raised bed garden and a bunch of big pots, so I've been able to weed it by hand effectively. I use some weed control chemicals in my back yard, but not in the area right next to the garden itself. As I get more time to expand the scope of my gardening efforts, I'll have to figure out how to efficiently manage my weeds. I'm trying hard to avoid "persistent" chemicals with questionable health effects, and I have a tough time believing that (like Gil posted) spraying weed killer on the ground will have no effect on the composition of what my family eats.

I spray hundreds of gallons of round up a year on my corn crop.. but there are a couple of other choices for small garden spots.. one.. a propane weed burner.. two.. you can use a steam cleaner if you have one and or boiling water to kill grass and weeds
