The problem I have here is a filet knife is not illegal.

I see your point exactly and good job of discerning the illegal drugs and knife scenario.

But have you seen the knife? Im not a pro fisherman but I dont think that is filet knife.

No. that is not what I was picturing when I read the story. I'm not sure I'm buying his story that it is his dad's fishing knife after seeing that.

I still think suspension is over reacting. The knife is still legal, but that image raises questions about his credibly to me. I was picturing more a a fishing type knife.

Check out TCA 39-17-1309 and 39-17-1307
Says that a knife with blade over 4 inches is illegal to possess for the purpose of going armed. And also about weapons on school grounds.

I guess he could say he wasn't possessing the knife on his person.

I think the real problem here is that if the school and police didn't do anything and later on this kid did something else it could be brought back up that this incident had occured and nothing was done. Then the lawsuits would begin.

When my middle son was a Senior they brought drug dogs to school. The day before he had my lab in the car and he had also been hunting. Luckily I reminded to take his gun and ammo out of the vehicle.

The dog hit on the vehicle at the door that our lab had went in and out of. During the search they found a pack of muzzleloader bullets. The officer took each bullet from the sabot and looked for drugs and/or gunpowder. They also went through a tackle box and questioned him about the possession of hooks. Then they found a fish stringer with a deadly point on the end, this really stepped up the questioning about what type of weapon it was.

After all was said and done I found out that this one dog had 7-8 false alerts that day.

As you enter the drive at Stewart county high school is a sign that says basically beyond this point you give them permission to search your car.

I,m sure glad they don.t search my truck or me is all I ,m saying. On the few occasions I now have to pull into a school property .
I fully understand why they have to have the law , but sometimes common sense is called for !

Sentence reduced:

"Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools officials said a school resource officer spotted a knife with a five-inch blade in the car senior David Duren-Sanner drove to Northeast High. Duren-Sanner said he was driving his father's car and had no idea the fishing knife was in there.

School officials initially recommended Duren-Sanner be suspended to an alternative school for 90 days.

After an appeal held at the school system office Wednesday morning, Duren-Sanner will only face 30 days at an alternative school. The new suspension means Duren-Sanner will be able to attend prom and walk with his classmates at graduation."
