Hard to believe, but juvenile season is just 3 weeks away! The only kids I have ever taken have always been 7th-9th grade boys who were familiar with shooting guns. This year it's possible (the our Hunting for a Cure program) I could be taking a child on their first turkey hunt and possibly even their first hunt period. If I have to provide any ammo or a shotgun for my guest hunter, what do you guys think about letting a newbie shoot a 12ga 3 1/2 shell? I am afraid that it might be too much, especially for a smaller, newbie hunter. I sure don't want for them to have a bad experience or even get hurt and be timid about shooting in the future. I patterned some Winchester 3" lead yesterday just in case, but not sure what a good 3" pattern would be. Any opinions are welcome!

No way, id go with a 2 3/4" high brass at the most & would use a 20g. No need to turn a kid away from the shooting sports with the first trigger pull.

heck no. use a 20g. or also if a kid is a little bigger I will let him use a good 12 that doesn't kick that bad. like my stoeger m2000 or something. or even like mike said the 2 3/4 anything besides a 3 1/2

I'm really hoping that the kid has their own gun because I don't have access to a 20 gauge. Never thought about the high brass 2 3/4, but I need to check into that option as well.

2 3/4 high brass shells or a 20 guage. Most of the kids in Hunting for a Cure have there own guns.

Relentless' boy (my nephew) shot his first two woodies with a 12 guage 3.5" steel shot when he was 7. Sure it might have knocked him down the pond levee but it didn't deter him from shooting at all. His only concern was "Did I get 'em?"! Hahaha

On a more serious note, he is now 9 and easily shoots his 20 ga. with 3" Mag Blends. I think that combination is about as deadly as you would need.
