I would like to hunt coyotes on WMA property. Since WMA restricts bullet use to rimfires only....in your opinion, which caliber would be the best choice? 22 magnum or 17 hmr. Thanks

I use the 22 magnum. I bet either will get the job done.

I use a 22 magnum. get the fastest rounds you can find. faster rounds have more knockdown power.

Either will work as others stated, myself unfortunately with the way ammo is, I would consider which one has the most readily ammo available.

The 22 magnum is a better choice between the two.

Someone needs to read some ballistic charts and understand the difference between velocity and energy. ;). Your statement is far from the truth.

Don't leave us hanging.
I've never shot a 17. How was it?

Can't speak for stik but mine is a tack driver. Never hunted with it other than killing a few tree rats that were getting in my roof air vents. The 17-grain v-max bullet will put a quarter size hole through them.

My .17 will hit EXACTLY where you aim.
It will blow the head off a squirrel at 80 yards.
I would imagine hitting a coyote in the side of the head with it would do the trick just fine.

If you were going to buy a new rifle I would go with the 17 WSM Winchester super mag. I've heard its 3000 ft per sec for the 20 gr and 2500 ft per sec in the 25 gr.

If you already had the 22mag or 17 HMR I'd try both and see which works better for you. I've killed them on FT Campbell with my 17 HMR but I've lost some too!

I have to agree about not being impressed with the 17 have owned one the mag is a favorite. Shote P-dogs out to 200 yards with one.

I have never shot a coyote with a 22lr or 22mag. I shot one last summer with a 17hmr because it was the only gun i had handy. Shot it at 32 yrds and it went down, tiny entry wound and no exit.It all depends on bullet placement and bullet type. I wouldn't use either if I was going out to hunt them, I would use a center fire.

I have both the .17HMR & the .22mag, & for yotes I'm a firm believer in the .22 mag but keep the shots within 100 yards.

Have killed them with both rounds & used the same bullet placements, the one shot with the .17 just flinched & trotted off only to die later, the one shot with .22 mag dropped in its tracks & never wiggled, no muscle spasms or kicking at all, just collapsed & was dead before he hit the ground.

IMO the .17 is only good for gophers & stray cats the spray my truck, its just to light weight & fragile for clean kills VS the .22 mag with heavier bullet weight & size.

Can you use a shotgun on your WMA (most allow). My slug gun shoots sub moa. Not sure what the effective range of a 17 or 22 mag is.

I have a .17 and have hunted with guys shooting a .22 magnum. Ive killed several wild hogs, ground hogs, crows, and coyotes. The .17 is a bigger killer in person than it is on paper for some reason. I do use 20 gr xtp's exclusively on anything larger than squirrels and limit shots to 100yds. The magnum kills great too, I'm not going to say anything bad about it. The .17 will kill anything from a 200+ lb wild hogs to coyotes like a dream from 100yds on in.

The 17hmr is very accurate for a long distance imo, My marlin 22 mag will flat out carry the mail out to 150y & ruin a crows day lol, my Nef 17hmr is just a tack driver, I shot a 3 shot group at the Norris range some years ago that could have been covered with a 1/4 at 220y ,putting the metal where it needs to be means more than horse power again just my .02

I shoot a .17 her but you have to get the 20 grain bullets not the 17 gr. you also need to check the wma and make sure you can't use center fire. They change the law couple years back on some of the open wma so you can use center fire for yotes ... If you go with 22 or 17 her try to make head shots. Not big enough to dust roll one. Howl!!!!!!!

If you use the 17 use the 20xtp but some guns don't handle the 20gr as well as the 17gr. you should get about 50yds farther with the 17hmr. 150yds is a good max for the 22mag 30 or 40gr. shot placement is key with any gun. if possible use the center fire.

.22 mag with 33 gr Vmax is hard to beat. I got rid of my .17 HMR because the .22 mag did everything the .17 would but better. Now the newer .17 Winchester Super Magnum seems to be the ticket for rimfire fire power.

Shot more than a dozen each with both calibers and the 22 mag is a better killer. The 17 HMR doesn't penetrate as well and the bullets blow up.
