I have a chance to buy both swamp white oak and regular white oak in 4" caliper trees. The nursery says they are over 10 years old.Which tree would the deer prefer??or would it be about the same??Which would produce the fastest and would you prefer??

Swamp chestnut likes wet areas and white oak is for dry to droughty sites. I have learned the hard way not to try planting trees where the tree doesn't match the site. What type of site do you have?

Where I would plant them,it is drier, not really on top of a ridge but a big real high area.In other words, there is a big bottom on both sides of my place.

Where is the property? In the central basin (Wilson, Rutherford, Davidson, Sumner, Smith, etc), thin, limestone soils are common. Chinkapin Oak does well here, and is a highly preferred white oak acorn. It has bark similar to a white oak, but leaves like chestnut oak. It won't be as valuable a timber tree as white oak, but who among us will be alive to see that anyways?

diamond hunter,

Unless the site is bottomland that floods regularly stick with true white oaks, or as Mick suggests, Chinkapin Oaks. Swamp White Chestnut oaks need rich, moist soils. But any species you plant, don't expect much acorn production until the trees are 20-30 years old.

Three years ago I chose Swamp White Oaks to plant in a low area that floods every year. Water gets up to a foot deep for quite a long time every Winter/Spring. At first I was considering regular White Oaks but as I learned more about growing trees it became obvious that this particular spot would likely not allow White Oaks to live due to the flooding. Also from the reading I did on the two varieties, they are about the same as far as time to produce acorns.

In the drier areas where I've planted the majority of my oaks I went with varieties more suitable for normal conditions. (White Oak, Sawtooth, Dwarf Chinkapin and Bur)

I have a twenty or thirty acre area that doesn't flood often, but also never dries out. The land ranges from squishy to damp, but firm, depending on the time of year. The swamps regenerate naturally here and the ones I have planted in slightly firmer areas have done well so far. They also generally drop a fair crop of acorns, some years better than others. Pretty red leaves in fall.
