Looking for some plans to build a simple entertainment center for the house. I know I can go get some lumber and build one pretty quick but just looking to see if I can find some free plans or some ideas on them. I hate to pay what a furniture store wants for them!

might I suggest you look on Craigslist or the Want Ads, you see them on both all the time, relatively cheap.

Price out your lumber then add what your time is worth. I had the same idea a few years back and ended up I was only saving less than $75. If you have a nice shop and are skilled it may be worth it for the love of the hobby but I am not that person so I decided to by one.

As for looking for plans, search the net. There are a lot of pics you can look at but as for plans there's very few. Most want you to buy detailed plans for $10-$15.

There are some simple "Shaker" style plans out there. Don't need any fancy router bits. You may want to buy a Kreg Pocket hole jig though. I've been thinking about doing the same project.

This isn't a very good picture, but this is an entertainment center I built about 3 years ago. I don't have any plans - I just took my wife to a couple of furniture stores and had her tell me which ones she liked so I had a general idea of the style she wanted, and sized it to fit between the windows and hold the size TV we have (55"). It is actually 3 pieces - I made the two side cabinets separately and they are screwed to the main center console. I would have made it out of cherry, but she didn't want any dark furniture in the room, so I used alder and stained it a little darker than its natural color to match the other furniture in the room. It actually would have been cheaper for me to have made it out of cherry, as I have about 700 board feet of cherry lumber stacked and dried from trees I cut off of my property.

Redwing is right - I consider a pocket hole jig to be an indispensable tool for a lot of cabinetry type of woodworking.
