Usually, coated means inoculated.|
If you have never planted that variety of clover before, buying coated seed can be an advantage. Inoculating seed can be a pain. However, once a particular variety of clover has been grown recently in the soil, the soil will already contain the property bacteria, hence no inoculation is needed.
