Fertalizing Honeysuckle.

I have a pretty good thicket of honeysuckle and greebriars. Is is wise to fertalize this in the fall or would this past pring been better. I'd like to give it a boost since the consensus seems to be the natural browse will be hit pretty hard this coming fall. Am am waiting for the first good rain and I was gogn to sow my wheat and maybe toss some fert on the surrounding thicket.
Am I too late to "Kick it up a notch"?

I'm no expert, but I'd advise against fertilizing honeysuckle and other weeds. Blackberries maybe, but even then I question the benenfit.
Honeysuckle grows fast on its own. And deer seem to like only the leaves and fresh growth. Without rain it doesn't grow. And with rain it grows fine on its own. Besides, do you really want to encourage the proliferation of a weed?
IMO best thing you can do is shoot as many does as legal to take pressure off existing browse. Thats much better for the long term health of the herd anyway.

I guess my "gut" feeling is opposite of pass-thru. I don't know the best times to fertilize. But I have and will fertilize honeysuckle, greenbriar and anything else I know deer prefer. Let us know how it works out.

I'd recommend natural browse over planted browse every time.

The best thing you can do for honeysuckle is to add lime and nitrogen. But I would wait until we start getting some rain.
Most of my honeysuckle is in little pockets of trees and along fencelines. The ground has lots of leaf litter. Do you just broadcast the lime and N on top of the leaf litter, or do you rake all the old leaves out to expose the ground?
Second, would it be OK to water/fertilize honeysuckle, during this drought, with 5 gallon buckets of H20 with MIRACLE GROW?

Yes, just broadcast on top the leaf litter and let rain leach it in. But if you want to go to the trouble of watering, that certainly wouldn't hurt.

Agree with BSK but beware of broadcasting Nitrogen in this heat. If you just put it on top of the ground without watering or having rain soak it in the ground it will evaporate. Nitrogen will start to evaporate at 80 degrees and with these temperatures and the price of Nitrogen you will be wasting money!
