Anybody know how to make Polk Weed spread? The deer are hitting it really hard around here and it's about the only thing that appears to have any moisture at all in it. Can I plant the berries that come up on it or what?

All the reading I have done on it says it is very toxic to humans and most animals except deer. Its also called pokeweed. Its like icecream to deer. Havent read where it can be planted but if you get the juice on your hands and it gets in your mouth it is toxic so be careful. Google search it and read all the info on it.

It is spread by birds that eat the seeds and poop them out in other areas. I don't know if the seed passing through a birds digestive system helps germination or not (like persimmon seeds are scarified by passing through a coyote's/deer's/coon's/opossum's digestive system).

Yes, polk salad is made from Polkweed. But perhaps boiling the leaves removes any toxins.

I thought you could eat the leaves. many peopleuse it like a salad green. For humans to eat it. You pick the leaves from newly sprouted plants in the spring time. Put em in a pot of boiling water.Boil em several minites. Strain the leaves discard the water. Put the leaves in another fresh pot of boiling water.

Polk is one the primary late-summer food sources of deer in the Southeast. Not only is it highly nutritious and easy to digest, it contains a lot of water.
