What kind of gun and what caliber do you guys use for hogs? I'm planning on using my 7mm rem mag but can go bigger if I need to. I have not been hog hunting before and am planing on a hog hunt soon so I wanted to see what you guys said first

I think it depends on the type of hog hunting you will be doing, ie dogs, feeders, or spot and stalk.

Any deer caliber will work for still hunting them. 12ga slugs are hard to beat at close range in the thick stuff. I carry a 1187 on WMA hunts and a .22 mag for dog hunting. The .22 mag is just for point blank stuff normally. It will get you ran over a lot though if your not careful \:D

More than likely they will be moving through thick stuff so a good brush gun w/ iron sights. Seen a lot hunt w/ lever action. Seen guys also shoot like a Rem 7400 or AR

Killed em on a lease I used to be on with 300 win mag, 45/70, crossbow and muzzleloader. My buddy and my nephew both killed them with 270s. Anything good for deer will work. I even killed one with a Glock 27.

I really want to use my 10mm but will probably wait till deer season this year to test it out on them first. I don't want a mad wounded hog in thick brush to deal with.

Caliber is not as important as bullet construction.

Pay close attention to bullet construction when selecting a gun for wild boar. They really are not that much harder to kill than deer if you get a normal shoulder shot but if you get a tough shot such as a angled shot or a frontal shot as if one is charging you.... you are going to want all the bullet you can get.

Nosler Partition and Barnes bullets would rank high on my list of bullets to select.

As stated just about any 12 Gauge slug will do the trick.

Most muzzle loaders with Jacketed Pistol bullets or Rifle bullets and conicals should do the trick.

Handguns? Again see the bullet construction but I would say a Min of .357 mag, 10mm, 41mag and up.

Again hogs are not hard to kill when you have proper shot placement.

From what I've seen and done a pistol will get you charged more often than not. They will eat .357 rounds like tic-tacs in the chest. They'll die from it but not before they figure out where it's coming from

I did clarify a minimum of .357 magnum. To further clarify I would prefer a Minimum of 6inch barrel should one go to field with such a instrument.

Again bullet selection would be paramount. Nosler Partitions or XTP hollow points!

I'll be using 148 grn Barnes tsx in the 7mm. And i went with the 200 grn hard cast in my 10mm for the penetration. I would rather be able to get a complete pass through on 2 lined up than not even penetrate all the way through one hog. (I will only be shooting one at a time)

Any semi-auto, lever, or pump rifle/slug gun will work just fine. Practice shooting off hand, so that you are ready and capable of making the kill shot when the time comes. That's the most important thing.

Ive killed them with a 22LR, 22 Mag, 30-30, 243, 7mm-08, 45-70, 270, 30-06, S&W 500 handgun and a bow. Which one killed them the best? The one where I lung shot them, regardless of caliber. Having said that, teh one I liked to tote the best in brush was the 30-30 and the 45-70. Whatever you do, dont take head or shoulder shots, they will indeed shake them off and stay on their feet.

In the woods or pasture, I carry a 4 inch case pocket knife ;\) If I kill one in my pen, It's done with a 22 mag in the ear, no matter what size the hog is.

I guess if all else fails I can borrow my buddies armalite 50cal with some 700+ grn bullets. It'll suck carrying that 40# rifle verry far but I don't think they'll run verry far after a shoulder shot with it. I'll probably stick with my 7mm mag and my 10mm for now though.

I bought a BAR .308 last year just for hog hunting. I put a Redfield 3 x 9 x 40 on it.

I wished I had waited for the "new" hog version BAR. It has a better magazine and a rail system.

There is no such thing as toooooooooo much gun when after hog! If your in the thick stuff, a 45-70 lever, iron sights. Don't forget a big bore hand cannon as back up. Would enjoy watching "SOMEONE ELSE" take one with a knife. Watch from a tree stand of course (ha)!

I'll take one out with a pair of finger nail clippers if it were legal ;\) LOL You guys are giving the vast majority of hogs way more credit than they deserve. Now, there's always that one that will make it exciting though.

I'm not sold as much on the caliber as I am the bullet construction. After my last hunt I won't be shooting "bargain" ammo. Yeah, premium bonded stuff costs more but when you're driving bullets through pigs at sharp angles you want something that will hold together.
